supporting thoughtful care for your horses.

Why test the tick

Daily routines already include careful checks and grooming.

Horses may pick up multiple ticks during turnout.

Without testing, it’s not possible to confirm if these ticks have the pathogen that causes Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi).

Undiagnosed Lyme disease can affect joint health and mobility, directly impacting performance.

Maintaining peak condition requires fast, informed decisions.

Preventive treatments are often part of standard care and can lead to antibiotic resistance.

How to use LymeAlert in your routine

Start with the basics

Check horses regularly, especially after turnout, trail rides, training, or time in wooded and grassy areas.

Ticks can hide beneath the mane, tail, girth area, legs, chest, and around the ears. Run your hands slowly over your horse’s body and inspect carefully after outdoor exposure.

If you find a tick, follow the steps below.

Immediately clean the bite site with either soap and warm water or an alcohol wipe if available. You may want to mark the site with a pen to keep an eye on it. The tick is a valuable source of data. LymeAlert’s home tick testing kit allows you to test a tick at home and have results in 15 minutes. If you do not have a LymeAlert test kit immediately available, you can place the tick in a sealed plastic bag and place it into your freezer until you have a test kit available.
