Why test the tick

Lyme disease at-home test kit for quick and easy diagnosis.

Without testing, pet owners don’t know if a tick has the pathogen that causes Lyme disease.

Early detection is important. Changes in animal behavior can be gradual and easily overlooked.

Preventive treatment is sometimes used without a positive test.

Outdoor environments mean ongoing exposure and increases the chance of pets bringing ticks into the home.

Lyme disease is expanding into new regions.

Practical steps for pet owners

Start with the basics

Check animals regularly, especially after outdoor activity.

Ticks can be difficult to spot under fur—run your hands slowly over their coat, feeling for small bumps, and look closely around the ears, neck, belly, legs, paws, tail, and collar area.

If you find a tick, follow the steps below.

Immediately clean the bite site with either soap and warm water or an alcohol wipe if available. You may want to mark the site with a pen to keep an eye on it. The tick is a valuable source of data. If you do not have a LymeAlert test kit immediately available, you can place the tick in a sealed plastic bag and place it into your freezer until you have a test kit available.
